Shirin is one of the later films by Kiarostami that further distances his idea of the production of motion picture from classical or traditional filmmaking. Shirin rehearses an experimental approach in filmmaking as in the whole movie, the story of the Queen Shirin of Armenia and her romantic relation with the Persian Emperor Khosrow Parviz is narrated through sonics rather than images. What the audience views instead, is an ensemble of female actors of Iran who are assumingly watching the story of Shirin. This film is among the movies that Kiarostami made in the last decade of his life to project women in his cinematic oeuvre. Shirin could be considered as a Non-Cinema or a Counter-Cinema that celebrates the rich history of female contribution to Iranian cinema. The Non-Cinema approach was later perfected in Kiarostami’s posthumous masterpiece 24 Frames (2017).
