Horror and Authority in Farrokhzad’s Khānah Siyāh ast
There is no shortage of research on Farrokhzad’s Khānah Siyāh ast as the solid early canon of Iranian cinema by a known female poet. What I have noticed, however, is a lack of sustained closed reading of the film with respect to the relationship between the representation of governing and authority and the documentary subjects as well as subject position. In my entry on this towering cinematic masterpiece, I will investigate this relationship through framing the film as an experience of horror ambiguity. In doing so, I also offer new perspective in theorizing both the documentary and horror concepts outside of their genre conventions.
